“I lost my job and became homeless. I arrived at Caring Hands as a guest, and an alcoholic with the support I found at Caring Hands, I haven’t touched alcohol since 27th January 2014. I started volunteering at Caring Hands, and thanks to Cook’s Dale Penfold, underwent on-the-job training to become Caring Hands’ chef, running the kitchen. In 2016 I was promoted to Assistant Manager. Because I’ve lived it and not learnt it, I connected with guests on a deeper level.
“After ten years volunteering and in employment at Caring Hands, I had to retire in the Autumn due to deteriorating health. I will always be very protective of the centre & the volunteers that give their time to help the homeless and marginalised of Medway.”
